Rebuilding Together Oakland (RTO) is a non-profit organization that brings communities and volunteers together to repair the homes of low-income homeowners in Oakland.  We also repair and renovate non-profit facilities so they can use their resources for delivery of programs and services to Oakland's low-income communities. RTO is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, Inc, the nation's leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities, and is part of a network of more than 200 affiliates providing critical home repairs to low-income homeowners at no cost to them.  Rebuilding Together was formerly known as Christmas in April.

The repairs are performed by thousands of dedicated volunteers funded by the generous sponsorship of local corporations, foundations, churches, synagogues, schools and civic organizations.

Our Programs

Repair and renovation projects are typically performed during our Rebuilding Days and accessibility and safety repairs are conducted year round.

National Rebuilding Day

Our signature program takes place in April and culminates on National Rebuilding Day which takes place on the last Saturday in April.  National Rebuilding Day 2011 will be April 30th.  During this time, Rebuilding Together Oakland organizes and deploys over 2,000 volunteers to over 40 home and non-profit facility projects sites across the city of Oakland.

October Block Building

In October, Rebuilding Together Oakland selects a neighborhood in Oakland to revitalize.  We work with a community anchor organization such as a school or church to identify nearby families with homes in need of repair and clean up parks and open space to remove blight.  Over 500 volunteers, supported by sponsor organizations, work hard to make an impact in a few square blocks.

Safe at Home

Safe at Home is our year round program to make homes safe and accessible.  These modifications address home repair and maintenance issues that potentially present a safety risk or limit the access to or within the home. Common tasks performed during a Safe at Home visit include the installation of grab bars, raised toilet seats, shower seats, hand-held shower heads, non-slip mats, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.  On occasion, we install wheelchair ramps.

Our Impact

Since 1993, Rebuilding Together Oakland volunteers have brought joy to hundreds of homeowners.
